POLITICAL IMPACT
Before the sinking of the Titanic, there were some accidents at sea that should've alerted the need to revise safety laws at sea. Americans were unsure if the government was controlling the safety laws properly. The Titanic sinking was the big push the government needed to fix the sea laws. The Senate and British Board of Trade took action to explain people's concerns of the sinking. The first International Convention for the safety of Life at Sea was held in London. This convention determined that every ship have lifeboats to seat each passenger. The shortage of lifeboats was one of the main issues onboard the Titanic. The cruise line believed the ship was "unsinkable", so having a safe number of lifeboats was something they were not concerned about. When the ship started to go down, there was chaos aboard. People were frantically running everywhere, not knowing where to go, what to do, or how to work the boats. It became a law that passengers knew how to use life boats in an emergency. The high-end technology that was used on the ship, was not so high-end in the communication technology. If radios had been used 24-hours a day, the crew and captain would've been alerted of the ice in the water. When it came time to send a signal though, the "SOS" was first used by the crew of the Titanic. It was determined that there be wireless radios on every ship. Finally governments were taking action.
The Senate investigated the Titanic and their report was given to the Committee on Commerce. The committee made a bill that would change marine laws. They also came up with a bill that said the number lifeboats and lifejackets on board would have to large enough for everyone. The International Ice Patrol was founded to find and map out large chunks of floating ice to prevent any more crashes. This force became the U.S. Coast Guard. With the help of congress, another bill was passed that moved the north atlantic traveling ships 60 miles due to icebergs. Another rule was also made that said all people to operate communication channels could not be amateurs. Handling matters at sea could not be for just anyone.
