When the Titanic sunk, America was in shock. People could not believe what had happened. Some denied it so much that if no one had lived to tell the story, they wouldn't have accepted that it truly happened. People felt almost unsafe at home. The cruise line promised to build an unsinkable ship. Everyone was in that mindset; nothing could sink the Titanic. Mostly people at home were disappointed with the false claims about the safety onboard. No one would have even thought that anything this tragic would involve the Titanic.
The people who survived were the lucky ones that were able to squeeze onto a lifeboat. Before chaos struck, women and children were first loaded onto the boats. When it struck the rest of the passengers that they were in danger, they were doing anything they could to get onto the boats. No one cared about saving the women and children first. Everyone was worrying about themselves. It became apparent to some that they had no chance of survival. Those were the people who commited suicide. They jumped off the boat, into the freezing waters. Hypothermia killed those who jumped.
Of the 2,228 passengers, only 705 survived. 306 bodies were found. There were 721 third class people, the most in any class, and there was only a 25% survivor rate. First class passengers had a 60% survivor rate. This shows you again how people paid for the way the wanted to be treated.
